Howe later wrote a “Mother’s Day Proclamation” in 1870 as a pacifist reaction to the Civil War, calling on mothers to come together on a specific day to protest the sad loss of life in war.

The bloody civil war was done

And Julia Howe was sad.

And angered by the carnage

It had been so very bad.

She sent out a call for action

To the women of the land

Our taxes fly over the ocean

To fund every Middle-East war

The money is urgently needed

Right here for the jobless and poor

Our bridges and highways are crumbling

Our education is below par

The money that’s now spent on killing

Could be spent to wage peace and not war

We should be supporting our students

Who struggle to pay for their loans

Some people are forced from their homes.
